Actually for the bridge thing I would say it was more reetald to the good luck and the fact that all the bridge came down all together so the people who were in the center of the bridge they landed! on the bridge again. It is true that police was there a minute after the accident but you should note that there are always many police cars at that area and the closest Hospital (U of M Hospital) is a minute from the place.I really do not like to consider this accident as a credit to the system, just because this happened and they could not see that in advance! The funny thing is I saw a couple of people the day of accident inspecting something behind that bridge and the other bridge which is very close to that and you can see it in the photos! I wish they were not testing the bridge!!

I just thought you would like to know that your poscadts aren't playing correctly within Google Reader. I bet it has something to do with the sampling rate you are recording in. Chances are Google Reader is limited to what it can successfully play back. I see that you are recording in 8KHz which makes sense for voice only, but maybe you could try the next one at 44.1KHz to see if this solves the problem. Just a suggestion. Have a nice weekend.

on that show other then Hee Haw and Hooooooooudy! ) Because today is Thanksgiving, I was reminded of WKRP in Cincinnati and the gut buisntg Turkeys Away episode. I have an unholy love for Archer. (How you say, Wah wah ?) I agree with the point of playing satire straight. Some of the best comedy I've seen and done happens when the people perform it just commit fully to the premise and trust the audience to be able to find the comedy in it. I think that's one reason Bill Murry can still pull off a lot of the same schtick from early in his carrier, we always completely inhabited that kind of, persona as if that's just how he was. Don't get me wrong, I love and respect Chevy Chase, but I don't think he quite had that until more recently Or maybe I'm just talking through my hat. (Which I knit myself.)I'm not saying I can't do adorable anime girl voice, I'm saying I WON'T.

Leftovers are hard to turn into something new and exctiing. I like to take leftover pot roast with potatoes, add cheese, taco seasoning and enchilada sauce to make a super quick enchilada casserole. It makes it seem like we aren't eating pot roast two nights in a row.

Am I the only one that misses the original Town Talk Diner? The one that was only open M-F 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM (or similar hours)? I looked forward to going there for breakfast on rare days off. It was no larger than Al's and much less famous but had the best pancakes in town. There always seemed to be some regulars sitting at the counter (IIRC there weren't tables). The decor was wonderful and coffee was in thick diner mugs.

I haven't been able to go home for Thanksgiving since I started College - and now that my old roommates have moved out or graduated, it's gonna be kinda lonely.

But my apartment building has some potluck event planned for Turkey Day, so I'll probably be bringing a couple of things to that and hoping it's not just me and three other people. I like this idea of an "Orphan's Thanksgiving," though.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, Headchef!

I get the jokes,- even while I am [ha-ha, reappropriation rules] a female from Minnesota who's currently dating a defensive lineman from Wisconsin, and who went to the University of Minnesota (can I just call it the Uni, since former president Bruinicks cut at least half a ball sack off the liberal arts college while I was attending (I, myself, gave an ovary to that misguidedly arrogant football stadium)) and, after seeing the present syntax posted on my screen, will probably go directly to takethequiz.com to see if I might suffer from Aspergers- that being said... I will admit, the syphilis thing offended me for personal reasons. Wait, did you say syphilis? Nevermind. But, to be fair, my only experiences of Texas consist of being pulled over repeatedly by state patrol,- I'll say 3 times, to stick with the theme- and each time overwhelming the air of whiskey with verbose patriotic rhetoric. So, I guess we do know how to make appropriate small talk, and Austin alone does not a Texas make.

Another accurate stereotype about Minnesotans? They're all a bunch of humorless reactionaries with no reading comprehension.

Obviously the tongue-in-cheek nature of the article went way over a few heads. So to clarify: When I use qualifiers like "seems like" or "rarely" before a statement, that statement is not intended to be interpreted as fact but rather as an observation based on numerous (more than three) personal experiences.
Also; when I write things that are hyperbolic, grossly offensive towards groups of people or plainly false; I'm employing a technique called "irony". This means that the actual meaning is a complete opposite of the literal meaning.

I employ this technique for humorous purposes. If you weren't an autistic robot; you might be able to discern that without me pointing it out to you.

Speaking of observation, guy from Minnesota, awesome use of deductive reasoning skills in characterizing us as coastal elites who have a "stereotypical view of us from the flyover states". Um, I'm from New Mexico, have lived in Minnesota for over a decade and am in the process of moving to Texas. The other two guys who run this site are from Michigan (pretty sure those states are all "flyover territory"). All we do on this site is slurp the great state of Texas (the undisputed heavyweight champ of flyover states) and generally feature recipes and articles related to Southern and Southwestern cuisine.

Also we make fun of Minnesotans, Iowans and 'Sconnies as all having borderline Aspergers, and we only do that because it's largely true.

Of course, you would have to have actually listen to a podcast or read an article on this site to know any of these things, including the article you skimmed over before self-righteously commenting on; as if the value of your opinion was self-evident and required no knowledge in order to validate it. Hmmmm; jackassy, self-important, reactionary Minnesotan who can't read?
Somebody went to the University of Minnesota*.

We DO appreciate your readership and invite you to continue commenting on anything here (even if you don't agree with us), but in the interest of not looking like a complete giblet-head, why don't you take some time and think before you go trolling about things you might not fully understand?

* Yeah, it's the University of Minnesota. The "U of M" is in Ann Arbor, MI and "The U" is in Coral Gables, Fl.

Oh, I am so sad you have not tried mi mama's flour tortillas. Even all of my father's sisters (and here are a lot of them) say they are the best. And while I love them straight off the stove, they are also so good the next day warmed up over a flame with eggs or beans and rice or avocados. Or....peanut butter and syrup. Karo. I know. But still good. The offspring (and grandchildren) fight over them, or anyone else who has tried them. Last note: Midwesterners (from dinner party post) :) yes and no on that. :)

I love the sweeping generalizations about people from Minnesota. You must be kidding if you believe that people from any other state don't bail on parties to the same degree as people from Minnesota. Just because you know three people from Minnesota who bailed on your party, or picked inappropriate conversion topics, does not mean we all do. So please don't sully peoples view of the great city of Minneapolis with your stereotypical view of us from the "fly-over" states.

I agree that Mr. Oseland is much better on paper than he is on TV. I always enjoy his articles in Saveur, and the magazine itself is the best thing I get in the mail.
Most of that rant was intended as a setup for the Orville Reddenbacher joke and was largely tongue in cheek. Honestly; the show wouldn't be the same without him, unless of course they replaced him with John Malkovich. I'm not sure anyone would notice.

In defense of James Oseland: Saveur's terrific, and he's a really nice guy in person - when I met him, I thought he was totally without pretense, and really thoughtful. Coming at it from that perspective, I've really enjoyed him on the show. I'm not going to fight any battles on the "foppish" front, though. He can dig himself out of that one.

Hello, I live in Chicago and we are having a heat wave here. Today it was 100 degrees. I had a taste for some home made soup, so I made a pot. Chicken and vegetable soup with a package a Mannichevitz split pea soup mix, a large jalepeno pepper, onion, celery.carrots, potatoes, garlic, yellow zuchinni, cilantro. I serve my soup with corn tortillias and use chicken thighs. I eat my soup in an air conditoned room along with some ice tea and lemon. If I get warm I take a cool shower afterwards.

@cstandi

Wow! I had no idea that actual human beings were giving us feedback on the comments section, because the only e-mails i get are spam attempts wherein it becomes clear that English is the 3rd or 4th language of the author. Thanks for your interest! Now, to answer your question..

I am by no means a "mixologist", and my palate has been described as that of a hobo who drinks a bottle of nail polish remover just to get to sleepy dreamland and away from the demon-dogs' howls. Basically, a sophisticate, I am not. However, many of my friends are mad geniuses when it comes to these things, and I can at least rattle off some lovely concoctions that didn't cause me to go blind. For instance, young coconut flesh in a bottle of middle shelf soju was one of the best things I ever tasted. It was a very hot day, and the drink was shaken and strained...I'm not sure how long the meat was allowed to steep, but I imagine it would be hard to over-do the flavor, so I would say the longer, the better. (But again, I'm no professional, so experiment!) Sticking to Asian themes, nori paper sake, served just barely above room temperature was also delicious.

I've tried several others, but none really stick out in my mind, as they were fucking B-O-R--I-N-G. However, a friend brought back a wine from the mountains of Mexico once...It was a very obviously hand-blown bottle, made for a wine that had been made in a pale, or maybe just a hole in the ground. What was interesting, though, was the young grass snake coiled in the bottom of the wine. Did it taste good? Absolutely not. Am I in any way implying that you should catch a snake and cram it into a bottle of malbec? Oh, heavens, no. It's just the only other interesting infusion I've had that I remember right away.

Keep experimenting, and let us know what you come up with!

Wow! I had no idea that actual human beings were giving us feedback on the comments section, because the only e-mails i get are spam attempts wherein it becomes clear that English is the 3rd or 4th language of the author. Thanks for your interest! Now, to answer your question..

I am by no means a “mixologist”, and my palate has been described as that of a hobo who drinks a bottle of nail polish remover just to get to sleepy dreamland and away from the demon-dogs’ howls. Basically, a sophisticate, I am not. However, many of my friends are mad geniuses when it comes to these things, and I can at least rattle off some lovely concoctions that didn’t cause me to go blind. For instance, young coconut flesh in a bottle of middle shelf soju was one of the best things I ever tasted. It was a very hot day, and the drink was shaken and strained…I’m not sure how long the meat was allowed to steep, but I imagine it would be hard to over-do the flavor, so I would say the longer, the better. (But again, I’m no professional, so experiment!) Sticking to Asian themes, nori paper sake, served just barely above room temperature was also delicious.

I don't know what Fulla and BBQ would do, but if you want non-gross smoke-flavored ice, I'd suggest making strong batches of Lapsang Souchong tea and freezing it into ice cubes. Or just infuse Beam Rye with the Lapsang Souchong and make a Manhattan with that. Smokey; piney; peppery.

During the warmer months my cousin will briefly steep Earl Grey tea in gin (Sapphire seems to work well) and mix with lemonade over ice. Make sure to hide your car keys before you start drinking pitchers of that mess.

Hey guys, I've been experimenting with liquor infusions for a year or so and it kills me to waste a whole bottle (or two or three) of booze on a disastrous end product. I've tried a couple of infusion recipes on Chow, of course the simple herb or tea & vodka infusion is a no fail (the home made Amaretto is so wrong, but my Russian neighbor took it down like a champ), but the flavor of whiskey tends to overpower anything I attempt to infuse it with. There goes $15 worth of star anise.....
The oatmeal/whiskey infusion sounds amazing, I'm also going to try making smoked ice for Manhattans - ever tried this? Can you post any really good tried and true infusion recipes?

thanks -

I like liquid smoke in very small doses. It does interesting things when mixed with fruit purees. Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to smoke an oyster tamale without over cooking the oysters. Think I'll have to go pork inside and make an oyster sauce (trying hard to not go asian with it) like, what about oyster and ancho.. in a sauce.. err. I had these corn crusted fried oysters the other day, and been thinking about it ever since. I'm craving pork, oyster and corn. I thought about you the other day when I was reading the Tao of Wu. Killer Bees attack, flippin what, murder one, phat tracks, A'ight? I kick it like a Night Flite! Word life.

@killadeez-
I mostly agree. For me, BBQ requires real smoke. The liquid smoke does not count in my book. This recipe is a cheat for those who can't smoke their own meat, or don't have all damn day to make something. So I guess next time I'm putting up one of these short-cutty sort of recipes, I'll be more careful in my wording. However, this recipes' title will remain unchanged, because I am both lazy and arrogant.

If you add a tablespoon of baking powder to the dumpling batter it'll fluff 'em up a little more (if, of course, you're into that sorta thing)... just putting it out there.

We'll announce it on Twitter and Facebook as soon as we get it fixed. We're also trying to make our first two podcasts easier to access in the same fell swoop. Future access shouldn't be so tough.
This is the problem with being cooks and not web designers.

UPDATE: I didn't even think to mention this, but a good technique for keeping your noodles from sticking together during the stir-fry process is to cut the cooked/rinsed noodles into shorter lengths.
You can simply pour them onto a cutting board and cut across the middle of the pile twice; lengthwise and width-wise(?). This will make moving them around in the pan when you stir-fry them considerably easier.
Good luck!

I too miss the magic of the TTD, however there is a silver lining. Since Aaron Johnson sold the Diner, Theros Group destroyed the concept but not the integrity of the staff who made it what it was. The bright side is that the majority of the all stars from TTD are now at Prairie Ale House in Eden Prairie. Yes, I said EP. Don't be scared, we are carrying on the tradition of the original TTD. I never worked there, but I was a regular who shared in the belief that comfort food with a twist, meticulously crafted cocktails and a fantastic beer list could save the world. I am now working side by side with the former TTD team at the PAH, and we are doing wonderful things. We have a menu that TTD regulars will appreciate, and 6 of the best bartenders in the state all in one spot. Who else has that? Come join Aaron, Chefs Tommy Begnaud and Tyler Wilcox, Adam Harness, Brad Smith, Chad Larson, Patrick Denny, Tim Baker and myself, along with the rest of our fantastic staff for some great new memories. You can even get a Jackson Pollock here. Come, let us comfort you!

I tried to make it clear in the writeup that I wasn't blaming the locals for letting TT die on the vine (it's hard to temper my Southwestern chauvinism towards the Twin Cities sometimes, so if that came across I do apologize). Sounds like you've been spending more time there than I had been (especially since the management changed a couple years ago) so the slow death quality-wise was a little more obvious to you. Luckily for us TT wasn't the only place in town trying to put a polish on diner food, it just happened to be the best in a lot of ways.
I still disagree that consistency is the only recipe for success in Minneapolis. Unless you mean that one can consistently order a Caesar salad no matter where you are or what time of year it is.

I'd argue that Minneapolitans (as a group) aren't in any way to blame for Town Talk's demise. I basically live around the corner and visited often, and was surprised at how utterly unpredictable the place was -- food quality ping ponged all over the map, prices were sometimes a steal, sometimes high, and I always felt like change (sometimes bad, sometimes good) was in the air. The place was magical, for sure, but magic doesn't equal commercial success. The only sure recipe for that is consistency, and that was pretty elusive for Town Talk over the long haul. Still, RIP. At its best, it was pretty epic.
